EASL Homes – Residential Design for Sustainable Lifestyles
January 4, 2010
Goal – as Architects we want to add our design thoughts to help create appropriately sized, green, beautiful homes. Our goal is to assist in both new and renovation/ addition designs which combine the best of technology and customized features.
EASL Homes – what is this? – the term “EASL” stands for Exploring the Architecture of Sustainable Living. “Architecture” refers not only to the built environment but also the larger aspects of sustainable living, such as food, clothing, transportation, education, etc. Our role is the design of the home, within which other sustainable (and fun, interesting, family building….) activities can occur. Following are aspects of the EASL Homes program:
- Combining industrialized and custom design – our approach in new residential design is to create a “hybrid” home which clusters the technology elements into a core which can then combine with unique custom features to meet your needs. For renovations and additions to existing homes, we seek to improve what is there, seeking energy and space efficiency in meeting your goals for change.
- Appropriately Sized and affordable – ranging in size from 500 to 3,000 square feet, our new home design approach seeks to have efficient and economical utilization of space and materials, provide for change and potential expansion, and provide special features for today’s (and tomorrow’s) needs.
- “Green” – incorporating all aspects of sustainable design, EASL Homes combine the best features of green (including affordable) design of materials and systems.
- EASL Modules – a home consists of many parts which assembled create a whole. Recognizing the importance of sustainably well-designed parts (or modules), our office explores simple to complex systems (mechanical, plumbing, electrical, special systems such as a wellness center, smart technology, etc.) , which can be factory assembled or custom built to provide easy access for service and change. These may be especially applicable to improve existing homes. See separate document for description.
- Compartment design - each home can have a great variety of elements which attach to the core. Individual expressions are almost infinite, reflecting the nature of the owners, the site, solar, view, etc.
- Beautiful – small and affordable sometimes equates with “ugly”. We believe that every new and revitalized home should lift the spirit and express the best qualities of life.
- Architectural services designed to express this approach – new projects start from one of several available core designs, and then we help you design the various compartments and site elements. Addition and renovation work is priced according to project needs. Generally, these services are less expensive than conventional residential design, seeking cost-effective approaches to meet your goals.
