Centers for the Healing Arts – Transforming Medical Design

December 22, 2009

Goal – we live in a time of dramatic change in health care concepts and delivery methods, how to pay for it all, who is covered,  what is included, etc.  As Architects we have a role to help organize, create, re-do, and plan for facilities to house the variety of health care specialties.   Our goal is to design spaces which will enable the transition to “wellness” concepts in which patients and professionals work together to efficiently and holistically address the many needs of the human body, mind and spirit.

Centers for the Healing Arts – Areas of Work  - the health care profession is very complex, demanding, and subject to profound change over time.   The following illustrates services that we provide to assist this profession in its important work:

  1. Health care facilities of all types – since our founding in 1987, Architectural Alternatives has worked with many health care organizations and systems on projects as simple as small home health offices to a new hospital and hospital additions and renovations.  As our primary specialty area, we are pleased to have the experience and skills to meet the complex requirements of this profession.
  2. Renovating and/or building new  - our office can provide the complete range of architectural and engineering services for renovations, additions, or totally new projects.  Beginning with conceptual or  master  plan work as may be needed ,  services are custom oriented to each situation and a health organization’s goals.
  3. Research regarding “Centers for the Healing Arts”  -  not satisfied with the conventional approaches and trends, we engage in our own research seeking to explore appropriate ideas, methods and questions related to human healing and wellness, and the related mental and spiritual components.  We offer information  on our blog and links on our web site to help you in your own planning and development.
  4. Green design, healing gardens and other connections with the planet – “green” is “in” but is subject to wide interpretations and economic considerations.  We utilize the “Green Guide for Healthcare”, have a staff person as a LEED Green Associate, seek to coordinate landscape and interior design as part of the healing arts, and utilize other techniques as part of efforts to do our part to reduce our impact on the earth’s resources and climate.
  5. Wellness Centers as part of EASL Homes  - our residential design work is called EASL (Exploring the “Architecture” of Sustainable Living) Homes.  We see the home as partner in wellness to the specialized medical facilities.  Incorporation of simple systems to encourage wellness, technology centers for linkages, incorporation of healing gardens, and other techniques are part of this work.
